Black Americana postcard - 

Mailed in 1914 from IL /  

This postcard has a lot of things to be noted about.  It is titled:  Serving Dinner on a Southern Plantation (although it is posted from Illinois).  You have about 40-50 black colored men seated on benches at a very long table that leads right to the stairs of the house.  All that I can think of is that it is a Feast of some type.  The table is overflowing with food and you can even see what might be a small cooked pig - as you can see the hooves sticking up in the air.  On the outskirts are other slaves with white aprons on that are there with food etc.  On the stairs to the porch are seated other black men with a variety of musical instruments as if playing music to the large gathering.  Does not appear to be any black women in the view, at all.  Up behind the musicians appears to be men that are higher up in stature, but I can't readily see if they are black or white men.  Visually off to the left there are several men with their dogs - as if standing guard and appear to be at the ready in case there is any trouble.

There is a small tear to the top center and the corners are creased but a fantastic and probably a one of a kind capture of life from almost 105 years ago!!
