Iowa postcard - Boone, IA

- titled: Bridge over Des Moines River crossed by Kate Shelly at Height of Storm during the night of July 6, 1881
- My research shows that @ 11pm - Old No 12 with 4 people on board (it was a pusher locomotive that was sent out to check on the track condition -as it crossed the Des Moines River Bridge it plunged down into the Honey Creek as the bridge fell away). Names people on the train at the time of the disaster were: Ed Wood / A P Olmstead (another article stated it was George Olmstead / Adam Agar / Patrick Donahue. Wood and Agar were said to have been rescued, the corpse of Donahue was found later but Olmsted was never found. A new iron bridge was built 1900/1901 officially called Boone Viaduct but nicknamed the Kate Shelley High Bridge. She also had a train named after her, The Kate Shelley 400. Her efforts allowed the next train with 200 passengers to be stopped in Scranton - saving them the fate of the first locomotive.
- Have this listed as Boone, IA but it was just outside of Moingona, IA - so that may be where it should be listed.
- Please note that the majority of the cards are over 50 years old and as such, are sold AS IS. Tears will be noted but it would be too timely to note each fault on every card. If condition is important to you - contact us with our number in the title & what it is that you would like to know or what it is that you would like pictured more closely.
- Because of the age of the cards - they are noted as being USED - no matter if they are written on or not.
