• back:  Second and Chillicothe Streets.  The first school building on this site was a log structure built in 1823.  Clark Smith was the first teacher.  The second Street School was a 3 story red brick building with a cupola, built in 1850, razed 1917.  Original tablet preserved in corridor.  A reproduction of a silhouette portrait of Henry Massie with signature and date occupies a place on the walls in the new school.  Henry Massie was born in 1768, founded Portsmouth in 1803 and died in 1830.  He was buried at Oxmore, KY.  The centennial anniversary of the founding of the city, was marked by the publication of a Pictorial Souvenir of Portsmouth by H A Lorberg.
• John G Whittier - The Good Grey Poct, wrote as follows to the publisher, Portsmouth is a beautiful and pregressive city and Josiah Shackelford was one of its earliest settlers.  The latter died in 1829, aged 93 years., and his and John Peebles were the first burials in Greenlawn Cemetery.
