Virginia postcard
mailed 1909 with a clear Fortress Monroe, VA postmark which is a DPO #1
back: ..at the time of the Revolution was the home of Thomas Nelson, the WAR GOVERNOR of Virginia, who sacrificed his entire private fortune in defence (as it was typed on the card) of the patriot cause. During the siege of Yourktown, Governor Nelson offered a reward to any gunner who would throw a shell into his own dwelling, which was at the time supposed to be occupied by Lord Cornwallis and his staff.
